Run, ride, run, swim, run, swim again, paddle, run again (or walk) and then drink your way to glory.

Wairoa Winners!

It was another awesome weekend of racing in sunny Bay of Plenty at Wairoa Extreme Race No. 20. A big thanks to Cole O’Connor Stratton and his team for taking on the organisation of this event and putting on a great weekend for all. Mike Dawson topped the men’s field adding a 3rd Wairoa Extreme title to his belt, some 13 years since his last,  with his previous wins in 2004 and 2006. Nikki Whitehead of Te Puke took out her first women’s title, seeing out the time-trial champion River Mutton of Okere Falls in the final.

Pitt Rohrer of Switzerland took out the Junior competition from Okere Falls’ Michel Uhl. Pitt won the junior time-trial and also made it through to the final of the Mens plate round.

Open Men: 1st Matthias Weger, 2nd Mike Dawson, 3rd Brendan Bayly.

Open Women: 1st River Mutton, 2nd Nikki Whitehead, 3rd Anna Bruno.

Junior Men: 1st Pitt Rohrer, 2nd Michel Uhl.

Entry Fee includes: 2 days of racing, Camping, Party, Free BBQ during Novice / Junior Race, T-Shirt (first 40 paid entries), Prize money, Spot prizes.

One of the more exciting aspects of this year is that we are running a Junior(U18) and Novice Time Trial / Boater Cross on the Slalom Gorge to get more people involved. (Who don’t feel comfortable racing on the Top Section )

Also we have our very own Paddock at Mclaren Falls Park for camping and an epic little dance party!

We ask everybody after completing the Time Trial Qualification on the Top Section to come hang out and support the Juniors and Novices at the Slalom Gorge. As we will need help with Demonstration runs, Safety, Carrying Kayaks back to the top and Cheerleading! There will be a free sausage sizzle and plenty of drinking water provided so no excuses not to come support the young rippers!!

Saturday 16th February

9am-10am – Registration (Top Carpark 100m Past McLaren Falls)

10:15am – Race Briefing

10:45am – Open Men & Women & U18 Time Trial Qualifications (From Top Section put in to banner river left bottom of Roller Coaster)

12pm Junior / Novice Time Trial Qualifications at the slalom gorge.

1pm Junior / Novice Boater Cross

6pm- Junior / Novice Prize giving and live music performances in McLaren Falls Park

Sunday 17th February

9:30-10am -Top Section Boater Cross Registration (if you were unable to race Saturday) (Top Car Park 100m Past Mclaren Falls bridge)

11:30am Boater Cross Start

3pm Teams Endurance Race -Teams of 3 (self safety amongst the team) from Top put in to bottom of the slalom gorge!!

4:30pm Prize Giving @ Wairoa take-out paddock

Things to note:


Safety will be placed at strategic points along the Time-trial course, but most importantly, no-one paddles past someone in need. Help them out.

Xmas @ Kaituna 2018

Another great Xmas at Kaituna was had. It always attracts a big crew and positive vibes. 60+ paddlers on the river. Huge thanks go out to Andi and Sarah and the crew at Okere Falls Store for putting us up every year! And to all the 8 ballers and helpers you know who you are. See you next year!

Kaituna TT 2018 Results!

Here’s the results for the 1st extreme race of the season. Congratulations to Martina Wegman, Zak Mutton and Pit Rohrer (U18) for taking the top honours. Brendan Bayly took out the long boat category in a Reflex, and Jesper Soerensen, Peter Williams and Blair Trotman took the win in the teams relay race.

Kaituna Timetrial 2018


The first race of 5 in the 2018/19 NZ Extreme race series kicks off on the Kaituna River, Okere Falls on the 24th November 2018.
It consists of a time trial race, a retro/long boat race and finally a 3 person teams relay race. Rankings from the Time-trial go towards National series points.

Categories: Open Men, Open Women, U18 Men, U18 Women, Masters (40 and over)

#Mandatory Pre Registration online: Fill in the form at the bottom of this post
Registrations close 6pm Friday 23rd Nov.

#Entry fee: $20 cash on the day.

• For the Time Trial you will get two race laps down the Kaituna River to post your fastest single lap time, which will count for your overall ranking
• Time-trial starts from the ramp at the control gates (put-in), all the way down to bottom hole, where there will be a finish touch-banner on river left.

#Retro/Long Boat race:
• Mass start format (boater X rules apply)
• Any plastic kayak 2.7m or longer can race

#Team Relay Race:
• 3 person teams (any gender)
• BoaterX rules apply.
• 3 legs – ‘Control gates to Weir’, ‘Weir to Waterfall’, ‘Waterfall to
Bottom Hole’.
• Mass Start from Control Gates
• Teams can decide their own order.
• Each team member must pass their team ‘baton’ to their next racer before the exit of the pool at the end of each leg. (Batons are provided)


• Safety will be placed at Weir, Waterfall and Bottom hole rapids for Time trial and longboat races.

#Kaituna Time-trial day Schedule:

8:30am – Waiver sign, payment and bib pickup @ Okere Falls store
9:15am – Mandatory Race Briefing @ Okere Falls store
10:00am til 12pm – Time trial Racing (Competitors’ individual start times announced at briefing)
12:30pm – Long boat Race (mass start)
2pm – Teams relay (mass start)
3:30pm – Prize giving @ Okere Falls store



2018 National Extreme Race Champions

Congratulations to our 2018 NZEWW Extreme Race Champions! Jesper Soerensen (DEN), Sandra Hyslop (GBR) and Oliver English (Rotorua).

Jesper Soerensen of Demark had a strong finish to his Extreme Racing season managing to stop a 3-peat from 2 time National Champion Carl Whitehead of Te Puke who had to settle for 2nd place this time. Soerenson dominated in the southern events, picking up both Citroen and Bullerfest titles.

Sandra Hyslop (GBR) continued her NZ domination tour yet again, winning the Wairoa Time-trial, Wairoa H2H and Citroen Extreme race, gaining a maximum possible 150 points to seal back to back National titles. Congratulations Sandra.

Oliver English of Rotorua took out the Junior Men’s competition, with consistent top 4 results throughout the season.
