Xmas @ Kaituna 2017
Yeehaa! It’s that time again, same time and place as last year, Bring your Xmas boating get-up, pool floaty toys and your view master, and we’ll see you for a super fun day on the Kaituna River. One week to recover after the Okere Enduro, Saturday 16th December. Join us for the most fun day on the river all year.
A jam-packed day of fun, once again there will be the progressing downriver boater X, an 8 ball race and teams beach ball race. In the past a few people with pool toys have turned up and floated down the river too.
Entry: Bring $10 entry plus a $5 secret santa gift (must be wrapped)
Register on the day at Okere Falls Store from 8:30am til 9:30am.
Event Schedule:
Rego @ The Okere Falls Store – 8:30-9:30am

A quick run-down of the days events:
Registration – standard form filling out.
Mandatory Briefing – This is where we re-explain the days events, plus outline safety issues.
Progressive Boater X –
Heats of 4 (drawn randomly) will race short sections of the river in a knock out style competition. The first race will separate the top half into an ‘A’ stream, and the bottom half into a ‘B’ stream. From then on its ‘knock out’ and the top 2 from each race progress into the next round. In total the river will be broken down into 4 sections.
The 8 Ball Battle –
Heats of 4 (drawn randomly) will race on a short section of river from the control gates to a banner touch on river right at the bottom of the slalom course. Along the way racers will have to battle their way through a series of ‘8 Ballers’ (kayaks, rafts, and topo duos) who will be trying to get in your way and slow your progress. Top 2 from each heat will progress into the next round. **If anyone would like to volunteer to be an 8 Baller please contact Brendan Bayly or Tyler ) **
Teams Ball Race –
Teams of three will mass start from the control gates, picking up there personalized beach ball below the road bridge, and racing it to the bottom. Racers may NOT carry their ball at any point during the race. It must be thrown, hit with the paddle or shunted with the kayak. First complete team to cross the bottom hole with Their ball wins!
Inflatable float –
Apparently at about 5pm a whole bunch of people are floating down the river on all sorts of inflatable craft. Bring some sort of inflatable craft if youre keen (pool toys go ok, some better than others). Sounds Awesome, Might see you there.
TO BE A FUN DAY ON THE WATER WITH FRIENDS – So bring your xmas cheer, your xmas get-up and have a great time!

2017 Kaituna TT Results

Open Mens podium from left Kenny Mutton (3rd), Zack Mutton (2nd), Vavra Hradilek (1st).
The first event in the NZ Extreme race series the Kaituna Timetrial went down last weekend, with nice healthy flows and some super fast paddlers combining to produce some of the fastest times we’ve ever seen down the tuna at commercially raftable flows.
The first event of the season is always a great catch up with paddling community, which together with the super fun kaituna rapids, made for an awesome day on the river. Just over 50 paddlers gathered for the race, with a stronger than usual field of junior men and open women which was great to see.
In the Open men category it was Czech legend Vavra Hradilek who took the win in a blistering 6min 5sec (Is sub 6 now doable??), closely followed by the quicker than quick father son duo of Zack and Kenny Mutton. In the Open women Martina Wegman (NED) narrowly claimed top honours from local Olympian Luuka Jones in a time of 6min 37sec, with kiwi paddling legend Nikki Kelly in 3rd.
The Junior mens category saw young speedster Jack Saies (Tauranga) convincingly defend his title with back to back wins, finishing well ahead of the pack in a time of 6min 35sec. Max Dobbe followed in 2nd place with Oliver English in 3rd. Special mention needs be made for Bill Thompson (Wellington) taking top honours in the Masters Men Category in a time of 7min 5 sec. Come on masters, we need more of you next year!

Junior Mens’ podium from left Oliver English (3rd), Max Dobbe (2nd) and Jack Saies (1st).
In the Teams Baton Relay, Team ‘Te Puke Thunder’ consisting of Captain Carl Whitehead, Cole O’Conner-Stratton and Jack Dangen took out the competition, earning themselves a delicious 6 pack of pilsner and mad respect from all. All in all it was a light hearted but super fun race.
