All 3 Junior men pose a serious threat to the open men in years to come.

The Wairoa X race weekend plays its part as 2 races in the 5 race national series. Your best 3 results count towards your national ranking. Click the link below to see how the points are allocated.
REMINDER:
Most kayakers are already aware of Didymo and the procedures and precautions to take to prevent its spread as well as other aquatic pests. Be sure to ‘clean check and dry’ BEFORE coming to the Wairoa Extreme. Especially anyone coming up from the South Island rivers it is imperative that all gear is decontaminated before entering any North Island waterways.
We may have some small scale decontamination facilities for your gear at the event if you are desperate.
Any questions or queries about this please contact me at brendanbayly@gmail.com or for more info visit http://mpi.govt.nz/…/other-progr…/campaigns/check-clean-dry/

2016 Xmas @ Kaituna Happenings

Xmas @ Kaituna 2016

This Xmas @ Kaituna is strictly social, and seriously fun. Sure we’re racing but but the day is all about having a great time and sharing some Christmas stoke. The recipe seems to be working as the event continues to grow in size every year, with 2016 no exception as a record 85 paddlers amassed for the annual bash on the Kaituna river the weekend before Christmas.

A progressing down river boater X starts the day with the river divided into 4 sections, 4 person heats, with the top 2 making it through to the next round on the next section of river. 85 paddlers packed into the eddies of the Kaituna makes for a super social race, a great chance for everyone to catch up and also meet new people. To mix things up and keep it even a mystery touch banner is stationed somewhere down each section in which competitors must find and touch before heading to the finish. Local speedsters Carl Whitehead and Toni George took out the mens and women’s categories respectively.

And as if that wasn’t enough boatercross next up was the ‘8 Ball’ race. Held on the slalom course at the top of the river, it’s a mad dash straight down the short course to the finish… If only it was that easy.

Rafts, Topo duos, kayakers, inflatables hanging from the bridge and fire hoses from West Rotoiti Fire Brigade are waiting down the course all with one common goal in mind – getting in YOUR way.

In this race its possible to go from zero to hero and back to zero again all within 100m of whitewater, so you’ve gotta be lucky and fast… but mainly lucky.

Young Jan Rohrer of Switzerland paddled fast and took his chances to take the 8 ball win with Nikki Whitehead in 2nd and Owain John 3rd.

The teams beach ball race then followed, with 25 teams of 3 trying to get a beach ball from the top of the river to the bottom before any other team. Again, easier said than done. Certain types of sabotage are allowed and balls and kayakers go everywhere! Mass start, 75 paddlers are let loose down river, into an eddie containing all 25 beach balls. Hopefully you decorated your beach ball uniquely so you can find it amongst the rest and then make your way downstream, throwing, passing and shunting the ball within your team.

By far the slowest race of the day but the teams balls race actually brings about the most carnage as paddlers become more fixated on the welfare of their beach ball than the line they take down rapids and the chaos unfolding around them. Team “Stink Balls” with Carl Whitehead, Nikki Whitehead and Patrick Mckee brought their beach ball A game to snatch the win right on the finish line.

Not offically part of the event but ‘for some reason it happens on this day every year’, the last of the water activities is of course the inflatable float down the river. This year we saw inflatable unicorns, whales, 3 stack rafts, paddling pools, couches, manta rays and many more craft attempt to make it down the river, with varying degrees of success. The warm deep water and nature of the kaituna rapids thankfully allow for these sorts of antics to go down with minimal carnage.

A quick prize giving at Okere Falls Store for the days winners and notable mentions and then its time for a mass game of secret santa. An oversized santa sack full of the kayakers’ wrapped presents is emptied as people reach in and grab a present, and then have to last 2 rounds without their pressie being stolen before they’re home free with their gift from Santa.

It was another amazing day on the water with the great people and a great vibe. Sound like fun?? See you next year!

Thanks to Rapha Boudreault-Simard and Mike Roy of Flow Motion Aerials for capturing the day with some epic drone footage, and you can check out Flow Motion Aerials on facebook for the edit.

2016 Xmas @ Kaituna

sean-xmas-kaituna

Yeehaa! It’s that time again, same time and place as last year,
Bring your Xmas boating get-up, pool floaty toys and your view master, and we’ll see you for a super fun day on the Kaituna River. One week to recover after the Okere Enduro, Saturday 17th December. Join us for the most fun day on the river all year.

A jam-packed day of fun, once again there will be the progressing downriver boater X, an 8 ball race and teams beach ball race. In the past a few people with pool toys have turned up and floated down the river too.

Entry: Bring $10 entry plus a $5 secret santa gift
(must be wrapped)

Register on the day at Okere Falls Store from 8:30am til 9:30am.

Event Schedule:

Rego @ The Okere Falls Store – 8:30-9:30am
Briefing – 9:45am
Progressive Boater X – 10:30am
The 8 Ball Battle – 1:30pm
Teams Beach Ball Race – 3:30pm
‘Unofficial’ Inflatable Float – 5:00pm
Prize-giving & secret santa – 6:30pm

A quick run-down of the days events:

Progressive Boater X –
Heats of 4 (drawn randomly) will race short sections of the river in a knock out style competition. The first race will separate the top half into an ‘A’ stream, and the bottom half into a ‘B’ stream. From then on its ‘knock out’ and the top 2 from each race progress into the next round. In total the river will be broken down into 4 sections.

The 8 Ball Battle –
Heats of 4 (drawn randomly) will race on a short section of river from the control gates to a banner touch on river right at the bottom of the slalom course. Along the way racers will have to battle their way through a series of ‘8 Ballers’ (kayaks, rafts, and topo duos) who will be trying to get in your way and slow your progress. Top 2 from each heat will progress into the next round. **If anyone would like to volunteer to be an 8 Baller please contact Brendan Bayly or Tyler ) **

Teams Ball Race –
Teams of three will mass start from the control gates, picking up there personalized beach ball below the road bridge, and racing it to the bottom. Racers may NOT carry their ball at any point during the race. It must be thrown, hit with the paddle or shunted with the kayak. First complete team to cross the bottom hole with Their ball wins!

Inflatable float –
Apparently at about 5pm a whole bunch of people are floating down the river on all sorts of inflatable craft. Bring some sort of inflatable craft if youre keen (pool toys go ok, some better than others). Sounds Awesome, Might see you there.

TO BE A FUN DAY ON THE WATER WITH FRIENDS – So bring your xmas cheer, your xmas get-up and have a great time!

2016 Kaituna Time-trial Results

The first event of 5 in the NZ extreme racing series kicked off in November with the Kaituna time-trial. Doubling as a qualifier for the WhitewaterXL boater X at Vector Wero the following weekend, the event drew a strong line up of both local and international competitors. Big international names such as 2012 Olympic silver medalist Vavra Hradilek and Vit Prindis were pitted against local speedsters Mike Dawson, the Sutton brothers and Kenny Mutton. The women also had a stacked field with current and past world champions in the mix.

With 2 runs fastest one counts, 70 paddlers lined up to take on the grueling 6 and a half minute sprint to see who would become the fastest paddler down the Tuna in 2016. With such a high caliber of paddlers in the field even making the top 32 to qualify for the following weekends’ WhitewaterXL boater X was no easy task.  Hradilek’s time of 6mins 27.49secs saw him take the win just 1 second ahead of Mike Dawson in 2nd with 6:28.67 and 16yr old Zak Mutton in 3rd with 6:32.29.  Jamie Sutton and Czech paddler Vit Prindis rounded out the top 5.

This was Hradliek’s 2nd Kaituna Time Trial title adding to his win in 2013, however the biggest headline from the event was the impressive result from the young Mutton. Only 16 years of age and already proving very competitive in a world class line up, indicating a bright future ahead. This also is the first time he has beaten his father and local paddling legend Kenny Mutton in the race, who was 2 time winner and defending champion coming into the race.

French paddler Nouria Newman topped an all-international podium in the women’s race with a time of 6:46.92. Just 0.60secs behind Newman was British paddler and 2016 Adidas Sickline champion Sandra Hyslop in 2nd, with Martina Wegman (Netherlands) in third with 6:59.17. First Kiwi lady home was Nikki Kelly in 4th.

Cheers to everyone for an awesome day on Sunday. 70 paddlers battled it out down the Kaituna @ a 400’s flow, the most we’ve ever seen at this event.

Cheers,

Brendan.
